Last practice today and upcoming tournament

Hi parents!

We will have what will most likely be our last practice today at 3 pm at Winthrop.  Our last 2 regular season games are Tuesday and Thursday.

I also want to fill you in on the year end tournament.   The tournament starts this coming Friday, May 2nd and our first game will most likely be 8 pm on Friday night depending on how Sherriffs and our team do this week.    It looks like we need to win one of our games this week to be 5th place.   This does not sound like a big deal but the advantage in not being 6th is not having to play our 1st game on Saturday at 5 pm and having to face the 3rd place team.
The tournament is double elimination running from Friday to Sat May 10.   I'll hand out a schedule at practice today but the teams will be designated only as 1st, 2nd and so on.     I still want you see this now even without the team names so you can block some possible times for games.

SKILLS DAY ON SATURDAY!!!

Talcor Parents:

This is a reminder about Skill Day this Saturday.  from 11 to 2:30.   I'd like to get a count of who wants to participate.  I think we can only sign up 3 players per competition.    I've pasted in the info below.    We will have practice at 3 pm that same day.     Also, obviously you don't have to do the individual events but it would be fun to do Around the Horn if we have 7 players.  If not, we can combine with another team.

Just shoot me an email to let me know or call me if you want to know more, 556-1083.

Jim

WP Tournament and All Star Information

Dates have been set for the upcoming tournament and are as follows -

Winthrop Park Tournament - May 2-10

Allstars -
11U-Year Old - Meridian Park June 9-13, 2008
12U - Meridian Park June 9-13, 2008
12B - Tom Brown Park June 9-13, 2008

State Tournament - July 10-13

11U Capital Park - Tallahassee
12U Fort Caroline (Jax Beach)
12 B Ocala

Just a few notes of interest regarding Allstars from experience
last year - If your child makes the selection it requires a large
amount of time commitment both on players and parents. Practice is normally daily and will vary in time (some morning practices some afternoon) in order to get them tuned to time changes.

You never know what time of day your tournament games will start - could be 8:00AM or 8:00PM so the boys need to be prepared.

There are additional costs involved - last year it was $125 registration plus uniform costs and a few batting instruction sessions. And of course the out of town cost.

There was fundraising involved on the 11U Team
which helped with the travel cost. All in all a great
experience was had by all and it was time well spent.!

Winthrop park pics

Winthrop Park would like to let you know about the "photo opportunity" we have at our park for our players and families.   We have asked for a professional photographer to come to our games and take photos of our boys in action.  Zac has agreed to do so and you will see him on the field during our games at Winthrop Park.  The park pays Zac a flat fee for taking photos.  We strongly encourage you to walk up to Zac and let him know which player is yours and that you would like some photos taken of your son during the game. He is going to take pictures,, so they might as well be of " your" son!    Zac is in a prime position on the field and takes great actions shots. These are photos that parents really can't get through the fence.

You can view the photos of the player by going to www.tallahassee.com.  If you register at tdo as a member, and post on the any of the blogs, you will qualify for 2 free photos (4 X 6) of your choice.  You can't beat that!!! When you head to the site, you'll see a cartoon person in the upper left corner with some text that says "Comment, blog & share photos." Underneath that, click "Become a member." Your screen name cannot have any spaces. After you have registered, go to the youth baseball site under sports, click on Winthrop Park and you will see all the information you need for our park.  (Please keep in mind it is still a work in progress.)  Click on the "more photos from Winthrop Park" and you add as a friend, or post.  That's it.

Please talk to Zac at the games and go to www.tallahassee.com to view your photos.  Once you have choosen your photos that you wish to receive give that information to one of the Winthrop Park board members: Pres.- Laura Jensen, Co-Pres.- Gina Sisk or Treasurer- Deb Nicoll.

Dugout conduct

Hi Talcor Parents:

I want to ask for you help with the conduct of our Talcor players while in the dugout.   It's important that we maintain a good climate of control and discipline in the dugout.  The players should be focused on the game which means watching play and being attentive.    Here a couple rules that the coaches need help with:

No player is allowed to leave the dugout unless he needs to go to the restroom.

Players must be on the bench or "on the fence" rooting their team on.  No lottering around the exit gate J

As far as food, I prefer that you not bring candy and goodies to the players.  I understand that if they did not have time to eat dinner for the early game that you may occasionally need to feed them, but as a general rule, lets keep eating in the dugout to a minimum.   We do have a water cooler in the dugout that you should encourage your son to use.   I don't mind Gatorade but try to give it to them at the beginning of the game.

Please ask your son to be attentive to the coaches and to the game.   The dugout coach needs to focus on the batting order.  He should not have to spend a lot of time monitoring the boy's conduct.

I'll also talk to the boys about this tonight.

See you at the park tonight at 6:30.   As always, please call me at 556-1083 if your son will not be there.

Thanks for you help and the opportunity to coach your son,

Jim and coaches

Talcor parents,

This is a reminder that we need parents to volunteer for concession duties for our home games.   Right now we only have the first 2 games covered.   We need 3 parents per game.  See the schedule below.

8 total home games with 3 slots each equals 24 slots.    If we subtract 4 coaches and Laura, than means 19 folks need to volunteer once and 5 folks need to serve 2 times.  It's important that all families pitch in to help.   Concession money is used to pay our umpires as well as many other expenses for the park.

Talcor Monday, 3/4/08, night game

The boys played a great game on Saturday.   Overall, the team hit well and made very few errors.

This is a reminder to be at the park this Monday night at 6:30 pm for the 7:30 game.    This will be the norm for late games.   For early games, try to be at the park as close to 5 pm as possible.    The early game is the most difficult to get ready for.

Thanks,
Jim
